If you like science fiction, try <i>Stars in My Pocket Like Grains of Sand</i> (or possibly <i>[Trouble on] Triton</i>); for fantasy, the <i>Nevèrÿon</i> series (four volumes, of which the second is a more-or-less standalone novel and the others are collections of short stories and novellas); and for straight out unclassifiable, <i>Dhalgren</i>.
